Rheumatoid Arthritis: Don’t Ignore Persistent Joint Pain and Morning Stiffness
Joint pain is common, but when pain, swelling and stiffness keep coming back, it may be more than ordinary joint strain. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition that can affect the joints and, in some people, other parts of the body. Recognising the signs early and getting the right medical evaluation can make an important difference in long-term joint health. (NIAMS)
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues lining the joints. This causes inflammation, which can lead to pain, swelling and stiffness.
RA commonly affects the hands, wrists and feet, and symptoms can occur on both sides of the body. Some people may also experience tiredness, reduced appetite or other symptoms beyond the joints.
Common Signs You Should Not Ignore
Consider speaking with a doctor if you experience:
- Persistent joint pain or tenderness
- Swelling or warmth around the joints
- Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes
- Difficulty making a fist or gripping objects
- Pain or stiffness in both hands or feet
- Recurrent joint symptoms after periods of rest
- Unusual tiredness along with joint problems
These symptoms can occur in several conditions, so they do not necessarily mean that you have rheumatoid arthritis. A proper medical evaluation is important.
How is Rheumatoid Arthritis Diagnosed?
There is no single test that can confirm rheumatoid arthritis in every patient. A rheumatology evaluation may include a detailed medical history, physical examination, blood tests and imaging when required.
Tests such as ESR, CRP, rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-CCP antibodies may be used as part of the evaluation. X-rays, ultrasound or other imaging may also help assess inflammation and joint changes.
Why Early Evaluation Matters
Rheumatoid arthritis can gradually cause joint damage if inflammation remains uncontrolled. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help reduce inflammation, control symptoms and lower the risk of long-term joint damage.
Treatment is personalised according to the person’s symptoms, disease activity and overall health. It may include medicines, physical or occupational therapy, lifestyle measures and regular monitoring.
When Should You See a Rheumatology Consultant?
If joint pain or morning stiffness is persistent, recurrent or affecting your everyday activities, it is worth getting a professional evaluation rather than relying only on painkillers or home remedies.
A Rheumatology Consultant can assess whether your symptoms are related to rheumatoid arthritis, another form of arthritis, or an autoimmune condition and guide you towards appropriate care.
